As 2007 closes we are faced with tremendous insecurity and change promised for 2008. With the Governor’s address on October 15th calling for $50 million in cuts across “social services”, the legislature’s intent to restructure the health and human service departments under the Executive Office of Health and Human Services and the MHRH plan for system reform, we are all wondering what 2008 will bring….

DSPs Honored At CPNRI Annual Meeting

Twenty-four Direct Support Professionals were recognized for exceptional service during CPNRI’s Annual Meeting held in November at Rhodes-On-The-Pawtuxet.

Every year, CPNRI recognizes DSPs from each member organization who exemplify the best practices of DSPs in the field. CPNRI Director Donna Martin presented the awards before a capacity audience at the annual meeting.

2008 Will Be Active Year For CPNRI’s Workforce Education & Workforce Development Programs

The coming year promises to be busy for CPNRI’s Education and Workforce Development programs. The CPNRI Management Training Program developed for first-line managers and supervisors will see new workshops in communications, diversity and advocacy. The next Management Simulation training is scheduled for March of 2008, and the Values Working Group of the Workforce Development Committee is currently planning the 2008 Leadership Symposium for May.

RI Representative Steven Costantino

Rep. Steven Costantino has become a leader in Rhode Island’s General Assembly on public health issues such as early intervention, affordable health insurance and access to health care. He has promoted a wide range of legislative initiatives including tobacco control, pharmacy practice, mental health parity, affordable prescription medications, access to health care and long term care.

Rep. Costantino is Chairman of the Finance Committe, and Co- Chair for the Permanent Joint Committee on Healthcare Oversight. CPNRI met recently with Rep. Costantino in his office at the Rhode Island Statehouse.

David Pitonyak, Ph.D., has covered a lot of ground in the past few years. The core element of his work is in exploring ideas for moving beyond interventions and coverage. David has a consulting practice (Imagine) through which he has worked with families and professionals throughout the U.S., Canada and England. A large part of his practice is in providing

training workshops and seminars on a variety of topics. This fall, he presented his “Importance of Belonging” program before a full-house of CPNRI members and guests at the Radisson Hotel in Warwick. After his presentation, David found time to talk with the Provider Link See Interview.
