The Mission of BRIDGES, INC. is to assist people in participating as fully as possible in all aspects of their lives and to support them to be productive members of their community.
In 1986, Bridges, Inc. opened its first group home for six people in Jamestown, Rhode Island. The organization was formed by James and Lisa Rafferty who had a vision of full community participation for all people with developmental disabilities.
Over the next few years, the State of Rhode Island continued its efforts to close the state institution for people with disabilities, Ladd Center. Bridges, Inc. became an integral part of this process by opening several group homes in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, This enabled many people who previously lived in an large institution to experience life in their own homes as productive members of their community.
Around the same time, Bridges, Inc. began developing specialized day and vocational services. In 1988, the agency began collaborating with the local school district to meet the educational needs of three young people living in Richmond. Our staff continue to work closely with local school districts to meet the specialized needs of children.
In 1993, Bridges, Inc. started to assist people who lived in their own homes but required some assistance to retain their independence. The agency continues to assure innovative approaches are used to provide each person with the resources they need to live life to the fullest.
Bridges, Inc. exists as a resource to the community. We are a non-profit organization whose staff and management are made up of a diverse group of professionals dedicated to the ideals of our mission.
Bridges, Inc. has a demonstrated commitment to serving people with complex needs. We do not limit our services to specific disabilities. Each person obtaining services from the agency receives innovative assistance based on the needs and desires of the individual supported.
