Direct Support Professionals are workers who assist people with disabilities to lead self-directed lives in their communities. These disabilities include mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, epilepsy and other cognitive and developmental conditions
DSPs support individuals with disabilities by assisting them with everyday needs such as general health care, medications, dressing and preparing and eating meals. DSPs are also involved in life-sustaining medical care such as suctioning and tube feeding as well as transportation, emotional support, financial management and helping people with disabilities with general life skills they require.
