What We Do: Activities of the RIDVP
The RIDVP provides non-partisan trainings and information to register people to vote, educate people about their voting rights, and make sure that everyone gets to the polls on Election Day.
The Project brings together a coalition of people and organizations within the disability community, with the goal of increasing voter registration and voter turnout. The Project draws the connections for disability interest voters—people who have disabilities and their friends and family, disability services providers, and others interested in disability rights—between the issues they care about, the organizations who represent them, and the importance of every vote. Creating this bloc of voters will ensure the government’s commitment to forming nondiscriminatory, equal opportunity systems that enable people with disabilities to live full and dignified lives.
The RIDVP consults with member organizations regarding customized voter registration and turnout action plans; RIDVP provides access to Automark voting machines; offers a series of trainings on how government and the electoral process work; and shares voter education resources on the candidates’ stances on disability issues.
The Project will go beyond voter education. Through non-partisan trainings and technical assistance, member organizations will learn how to utilize member, client, and volunteer bases more effectively for phone-banking, action opportunities, voter registration, and turnout.
The Project expects to unite the Rhode Island disability community around the crucial issue of gaining the acceptance and respect of our policy-makers and community.
